A Little Bit About Dog Licensing
Please note that all municipalities in the state of new jersey are required to have their resident’s dogs licensed. The reasoning behind this is to try and make sure that all dogs receive their rabies vaccinations as you cannot get a license unless your dog has an up-to-date rabies vaccination. At this time, Califon does not require cats to be licensed, however we encourage all cat owners to please get their felines vaccinated against rabies!

Another great reason to get your dog licensed is for quick identification if your dog were to get away from you and is found wandering in neighboring streets. If your dog has a license, the party who finds your dog can just call us down at the municipal office and we can then get you reunited with your pet without further intervention. If there is no license or ID then the animal control officer must be called and must come out to Califon, pick up your dog and bring him/her back to the kennel. You will then be responsible for paying for the dispatch fee and kennel costs.
In the past few years there has been a noticeable decrease in residents getting their dog licensed. Please be advised that we will be issuing violations if you fail to license your dog.
Forms can be found on our website and are available at our office. If your dog has been licensed before, you do not need a form, just mail in the fee with a copy of your updated rabies certificate (if applicable) or drop it off at the municipal office.
The deadline to submit your dog licenses application is January 21st, 2025.
