Thinking About Home Improvements?

Are you thinking of refreshing the look of your property or home? Just remember when making improvements you first need to secure the required permits.

The first thing you will need to do is obtain a zoning permit. A zoning permit is necessary for the construction, reconstruction, alteration, conversion, installation of or addition to any structure of a building including accessory structures, gates, fences and signs. If you are not sure if you need a zoning permit or have any questions, please contact our Zoning Officer, William Skene at 908-832-7850 ext. 208 or wskene@califonboro.net . Once Bill receives the zoning permit application he will first check to determine if your home is in the designated Historic District. If it is, you will be directed to make an application to the Historic Preservation Commission. All homeowners that reside in the Historic District will be receiving a letter advising the same in January of 2018.

If your home is not in the Historic District, the Zoning Officer will review your application and either approve or deny your request. If denied, you will be advised on what you can do to remedy the denial. Likely it will require a variance which would be reviewed by the Planning / Zoning Board. Once the permit is approved, you or your contractor will then proceed with obtaining the required permits from the Construction Code office at : 108 Fairmount Rd. W., Califon, NJ 07830.
