A passerby may drive through Califon and mentally note all the obvious things that make Califon unique; from our quaint downtown shops; the historic bridge, the natural beauty of the river and trail; and the charming homes that line Main St. However, what they may miss is all that makes Califon special. The residents of Califon are what truly makes the town special. While we are comprised of many who have lived here all of their lives and who still greet each other on the street with a friendly wave; as well as the many new-comers who have chosen Califon for its hometown magic; all that live here appreciate and cultivate what might loosely be called “community spirit”.
Within our community there are volunteers serving the town in many capacities and with many talents. These residents donate their energy; giving tirelessly to serve and protect their neighbors and neighborhoods, with the history and charm of Califon always in mind. From our emergency services organizations to our committees who promote the town; preserve its history; improve the park; and who serve our School board; our volunteers are our most valued asset. While many other towns may boast about volunteer involvement, it is the enthusiasm and synergy of our community members, wishing to perpetuate all that is good about our town, that makes all that we are; uniquely-special Califon.
In the spirit of honoring those who have preserved our liberty and advance our freedoms, on Monday, May 25th, the Califon Recreation Committee will proudly present its 14th ANNUAL CALIFON MEMORIAL DAY PARADE AND MEMORIAL SERVICE.
As in the past, the parade will start at 11:00 a.m. on School Street and will feature bagpipers, the 15th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Company A, antique cars, scout troops, area fire companies and rescue squads and more. The parade will proceed down Main Street and will continue on to Califon Island Park.
In honor of those being remembered, bagpipes will play from the center of the Califon Bridge. A memorial service will be held at noon next to the Califon Veterans Memorial. The National Anthem will be played while local scouts raise the American flag. The 15th Volunteer Infantry will close the memorial service by performing a 21 gun salute as we pause for a moment of silent contemplation.
Afterward, Califon Fire Company will have food and drinks for purchase. Also joining the festivities are the Kona Ice Truck, Fun Fitness on Wheels by Kidz on the Go, and more!
Invitation is still open for community groups and organizations to participate; participants with antique cars and tractors, floats, animals (and their owners!), musical ensembles, etc. All are welcome and encouraged to participate in this annual event. Please contact Megan Riccio at megriccio@hotmail.com to register or for additional information.
In the spirit of community and remembrance, please join us on Memorial Day to honor our veterans and to enjoy an afternoon filled with all that makes Califon uniquely-special.
